OUR LADY OF SORROWS
With Julia Gooding, soprano and Robin Blaze, countertenor

FRIDAY 12th MARCH 2010

7.30pm

St. Brandon’s Church, Brancepeth, Durham DH7 8DE

The medieval religious poem "Stabat Mater'  by G.B. Pergolesi had a long history of devotional use and musical setting before
the establishment of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows in March 1727. With the scoring of 2 singers and strings, unusual for
devotional music and caused by financial constraints, Pergolesi produced a score rich in 'chiaroscuro' effects of light and shade,
interpreting the poem as a sequence of dramatic images rather than a narrative. Copied and arranged throughout the C18th,
this work is made more poignant by the fact that it was finished on Pergolesi's deathbed, aged 26.
